Dylan Rieck - Solo Cellist
Dylan Rieck is a professional orchestral cellist, composer and music teacher, currently residing in Portland. Dylan started cello lessons at the age of five in Bellingham, Washington. A few years later he began improvising under the direction of a local folk musician. This set early precedents for Dylan's enthusiasm for both classical and popular styles of music.
While attending the University of Washington, Dylan studied theory and history while earning a BA in Music along with sharpening his skills by acquiring a BM in Cello Performance. During his undergraduate period, he was the principal cellist of the University of Washington Orchestra and winner of the University Concerto Competition. Also during this time, he continued collaborating with choreographers and playing cello in bands of many styles. Dylan attended the University of Texas where he pursued a Master's Degree in Cello Performance and received an award for 'Outstanding Master's Recital' for his performance of both Haydn C and D Concerti with chamber orchestra.
As a member of Balmorhea, The Crying Shame, Stop Thief! and other touring bands, Dylan has played nearly 1000 concerts all over the US, and in 15 countries around the world. He has appeared as both performer and arranger on over 40 albums spanning a wide range of musical styles. He has contributed original music to TV, film, and video games.
Dylan’s varied experience and talent at playing by ear allow him to work quickly and efficiently to adapt to any musical setting. He thrives playing solo, in small chamber or jazz groups or in a full-scale orchestra.
